Submissions call to writers and artists of Ontario

From Hamilton to Mississauga, from Sarnia to Barrie, from Toronto to Ottawa, we are a diverse group of neighbours and include creative folks of all strokes.  

We of the new Things That Matter anthology team are looking for poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction and high contrast and/or black & white artwork/photography. 

 This venture, Things That Matter, will become a black & white printed book with an online version. 


Why the name? 

You focus on subjects that are important to you...and to the world. Whether it be love, peace and green fields, or fury, war and oil sands, you portray your passion from your heart to your hand to your page. 

Our desire is to provide a platform for the best of provocative poetry, profound fiction/nonfiction and memorable imagery. This does not mean it cannot be funny (e.g., satire is a brilliant medium) or furious (i.e., passionate). But it must be thought provoking and unique.  

Submissions will be blind and go through two processes of selection, with two sets of editors: the first to narrow down to 50 for each category (see submission guidelines)
and the second to read and select from the shortlist.  

The selected works will be published in a beautiful quality softcover book and be available for sale. The published authors/artists will receive one free copy. There will be a book launch in Oakville. Alternatively, we can mail your copy.

The book will be made available at cost on amazon.com.

Submissions guidelines 

 Deadline for all submissions is April 30, 2018. Please try to enter earlier; our selection committee will thank you. 

 We ask for no more than two (2) poetry (in one Word doc) or one prose submission. 
 Times New Roman, 12 pt. text. For prose, double spaced. 

 You must attach a separate document with your work's title and your name, home address, email address  and phone number, as well as a 50-word maximum bio.

 You must be a resident of Ontario.

 On your poetry and prose submission, title only, along with your work.  

 No more than four (4) pieces of visual art, as jpegs. Works need to be high resolution and either black and white or greyscale.

 Unpublished work only. We allow and encourage simultaneous submissions, but please let us know if  your piece is accepted elsewhere and no longer available to us.  

 All copyright remains with the writer. However, after Things That Matter has been published, please acknowledge it as "first published in" if you republish the same work somewhere else. 

 When emailing your submission, please indicate in the 'Subject Line' either "Prose", "Poetry", or "Visual Art". If submitting to more than one category please send 1 email per category.
  • Poetry: Maximum line count, including lines between stanzas: 80 for each poem, excluding title line.
  • Fiction: (any genre): Maximum word count, excluding title: 1,400
  • Literary Nonfiction: (memoir, biography, essay -personal or academic):  Maximum word count, excluding title = 1,400 (if academic, please include works cited)
  • Visual Art: Four (4) pieces of visual art, as jpegs. Works need to be high resolution and either black and white or greyscale.


 As a new anthology we are unable to pay contributors. All of the money we receive will go directly to our technical maintenance (print, online, etc.). We do not get paid; our venture is not for profit. Any monies left over will be put toward our next anthology. However, published contributors do receive one free book.

 "Things That Matter" is a project initiated by Derik Hawley, Sheila Tucker and Josie Di Sciascio-Andrews. They have all been active in the writing community in Oakville.



Sheila Tucker is published in national newspapers, schoolbooks and various anthologies including the University of Toronto Press. She has won contests, and some of her work can be found online. For eighteen years, Sheila was an editor and graphic designer for an international firm. Her most recent works include  writing a full-length book.






Josie Di Sciascio-Andrews has written five collections of poetry: The Whispers of Stones, Sea Glass, The Red Accordion, Letters from the Singularity and A Jar of Fireflies.
Nature and one's place in it, as well as memory and social justice are her muse.
Her poems “The Red Accordion” and “Emerald City” were shortlisted for Descant's Winston Collins Best Canadian Poem Prize and The Malahat Review's Open Seasons Award respectively.In 2015, her poem “Ghost” received first prize in Toronto's Big Pond Rumours Contest. Josie is the author of two non-fiction books: How The Italians Created Canada and In the Name of Hockey. She lives, teaches and writes in Oakville, Ontario.



Derik Hawley is an artist and editor who lives in Oakville. His artwork is in galleries and private collections in North America, Africa and Europe. He has helped publish two literary anthologies and several books of poetry and prose for clients. He is the author of two performed plays, many poems, and two short stories.
